A few weeks ago we got out of town for a weekend and went to Catoctin Park north of Gaithersburg, MD. We had tried to go camping in Shenandoah National Park a few weeks ago, but got seriously rained out. So we learned that you don’t make reservations on the east coast — especially in July and August–you never know when in will rain!
Aliyah was stoked to be sleeping in a tent! She was so excited that any nap was out of the question. There is a man-made lake with a roped off area for splashing. We did one small hike and Aliyah enjoyed “balancing” on the rocks.

Although we only went for one night, it was a great practice camping trip for us. Jonathan picked out this great camping area that was only about 1 hour away from Brookland. We are surely planning on going again before the weather gets cooler!
If you are interested, check it out here.
Also, we are thinking about changing our photo gallery over to Picasa web albums. I am not entirely convinced… I am still learning about the program. It’s much easier to use, but we wouldn’t be able to keep the storage for the past years as we have done on the old Gallery. If you have any feelings about this, let us know!
Check out the new Picasa Web album.

Today Katrina spent most of the day at CUA taking her placement exams in theory, music history, etc. – so I got to take Aliyah to a play date with her new classmates. Aliyah is entering a co-op play school this fall, it will meet twice a week and is hosted at our church. Today one of the families graciously hosted a play date for all of the kids and parents involved, giving us all a chance to get to know one another.
I enjoyed talking to the other parents, and as it turns out several families live in our neighborhood of Brookland. Aliyah had a blast, she quickly overcame any shyness and spent well over an hour splashing in the kiddie pool and making new friends. It was only after her lips began to turn blue that I took her out.
After Katrina finished her exams this afternoon, we picked her up and went out to La Loma Mexican Restaurant on Massachusetts Ave. to kind of celebrate and relax. Aliyah enjoys Mexican food almost as much as her parents! As the evening was so nice, we decided to walk down the street to Stanton Park – which has a great toddler playground – to let Aliyah burn off some energy before we headed home to start the night-time routine.
Aliyah is just big enough to really take advantage of the playground equipment, so she had a wonderful time… until she slipped on some loose rocks and fell as we left the park. She might have a black eye tomorrow, oops!
Katrina and I are very pleased with our decision to move into Washington from Hyattsville. It is fantastic to have everything so close – school, work, church, and all the regular city stuff as well as many museums and parks. Today we were able to get downtown from CUA in a few minutes, then walk to a park on a whim after eating at a restaurant. Fantastic!
