Play date and exams

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:35 pm by Jonathan

Today Katrina spent most of the day at CUA taking her placement exams in theory, music history, etc. – so I got to take Aliyah to a play date with her new classmates.  Aliyah is entering a co-op play school this fall, it will meet twice a week and is hosted at our church.  Today one of the families graciously hosted a play date for all of the kids and parents involved, giving us all a chance to get to know one another.

dsc07401.JPGI enjoyed talking to the other parents, and as it turns out several families live in our neighborhood of Brookland.  Aliyah had a blast, she quickly overcame any shyness and spent well over an hour splashing in the kiddie pool and making new friends.  It was only after her lips began to turn blue that I took her out.

After Katrina finished her exams this afternoon, we picked her up and went out to La Loma Mexican Restaurant on Massachusetts Ave. to kind of celebrate and relax.  Aliyah enjoys Mexican food almost as much as her parents! As the evening was so nice, we decided to walk down the street to Stanton Park – which has a great toddler playground – to let Aliyah burn off some energy before we headed home to start the night-time routine.

dsc07409.JPG Aliyah is just big enough to really take advantage of the playground equipment, so she had a wonderful time… until she slipped on some loose rocks and fell as we left the park.  She might have a black eye tomorrow, oops!

Katrina and I are very pleased with our decision to move into Washington from Hyattsville.  It is fantastic to have everything so close – school, work, church, and all the regular city stuff as well as many museums and parks.  Today we were able to get downtown from CUA in a few minutes, then walk to a park on a whim after eating at a restaurant.  Fantastic!

Surviving the Deluge

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:08 am by Jonathan

You may have heard on the news about the 200-year rainstorm [Washington Post] we’ve had here in the DC area. We made it through fine, thanks for the concerned calls! While we received 12″ of rain in four days, our apartment complex is on a tall hill so we don’t have to worry much about flooding. I have been back at work since last Monday, and luckily my commute wasn’t terribly impacted by the storm. The worst is over and it should be back to our regular humid summer days.

Katrina posted several new photographs in the gallery, so go check them out!

I took this video right after Katrina gave birth. At the beginning of it Aliyah is about 5 minutes old!

Baby pictures

Posted in Uncategorized at 12:09 am by Jonathan

We were discharged from the hospital yesterday.  Mama and baby are great!  The first couple nights were real rough, but we’re off to a good start tonight.  Aliyah and I had our first music listening session today.  We listened to Mvt. III of Beethoven’s Piano Sonata No. 29 in B-flat Major (Hammerklavier).  I don’t know how well she paid attention since she was a limp noodle in my arms, but it was special nonetheless.

I’m sorry for the disjointed thoughts, lack of sleep does affect clarity of the mind!

In any case go to the photo gallery on the right for pictures from the hospital!

She’s here!

Posted in Uncategorized at 1:00 pm by Jonathan

Hi everyone! Just a quick note to let you know how we’re doing.

At 11:30am yesterday (May 24) Katrina checked herself into the hospital, I joined her a short while later… and at 4:38pm we had a baby girl! Her name is Aliyah Helen Smith. (AH-lee-yah) She is beautiful! 7 lbs. 10 oz. and 19.5 inches long. Shes very healthy and pink! Lots of brown hair and chubby cheeks. There were no complications at all. Mommy and baby are still recovering at the hospital and we expect to be home tomorrow.

In the next few days I’ll get pics and more details up so stay tuned.

Thank you for all of your prayer and support and well-wishes! I’m sorry we haven’t had time to respond to phone calls and emails, we will soon.

New Car and Info Overload

Posted in Uncategorized at 4:33 pm by Jonathan

Hey everyone.  We bought the “momma mobile” yesterday, and it is one mean momma mobile!  It is a 2002 Honda CR-V EX, 4WD, black interior and exterior with all the trimmings!  This is a major upgrade for us, not to mention the newest car we’ve had.  We’ll miss the Integra but the CR-V is certainly something we can use for a long time.  I am especially comforted by the superior safety and reliability ratings all manner of reviews have given our “mini-suv”.  I guess we’re turning into a Honda family… 1 Acura Integra + 1 Honda CR-V = 2 Hondas.  We’ll try to get pics up soon.

As for me, I am still riding the Metro and driving my “never-say-die” ’94 Ford Aspire.  And to think it was manufactured by Kia….

I’m juggling work and school and a pregnant wife… this week I was at a conference held in DC, Computers In Libraries.   I went to some really good sessions and some not so good ones, ate sushi, had lively discussions about post-modernism, drank some Belgian beer, had lively discussions about Web 2.0, and took a lot of notes.  At some point I suppose I’ll have to process everything.  My life over the past year has been precariously balanced on the precipice of Information Overload and this past week is a fine example.

Last Dance

Woah! Big change, huh? I’ve switched our website over to a different program. We had previously been using Mambo, and while great it was just too much for what we wanted to do. So now we’re using WordPress, blogging software that I’m quite comfortable with since I use it on my own blog.

Sorry about the basic layout and electric blue, but I thought it would be best to just get the site up since I’m not sure when I’ll have time to make it pretty. Hopefully it will be easier for us to update, so you can expect to hear more from us!

You can still see all of our picture via the Photo Gallery link to the right. However that hasn’t been updated in a while either.

I had no idea, but it looks as though Internet Explorer breaks the format of the site. I’m not sure how long it has been like this as I hardly use IE. I did fix the front page, but it looks like the Photo Gallery is still broken when you view it with IE. It may be a week before I have time to figure out what the problem is. In the mean time, I’d like to take this opportunity to recommend an alternate browser… a safer, faster, funner browser called Firefox. Download it and give it a spin!

Wow, it has been awhile since we last updated our website. Not only that, but we haven’t redesigned it in about four years! Well, the time has come for a major redesign and it is nearly ready.

The coolest part about this new site is the photo gallery! Be sure to check it as we will gradually be adding our pictures to it. You may think you’ve seen some of them before, but we’re going to include quite a bit more than we had the old site.

As for an update on our lives….

Katrina’s Master recital is May 1st. Some family and friends will be visiting from California then and we are really looking forward to it! At the end of the month Katrina will be graduating with her Master of Music degree!

Jonathan is still enjoying his job at Catholic University. I’ve kept busy lately by playing Bass Guitar in a musical production of Grease. I also recently applied to Catholic University’s graduate school and now am waiting for official word on whether I’ll be accepted. Cross your fingers!

Now I’m going to get back to finishing this site and getting rid of the ugly orange colors!!!

The first snow of winter is here. Katrina had her last day of class for the fall semester Friday and I (Jonathan) began a two-week vacation yesterday. The biggest news recently is my new job. I left Borders and am now employed as the Electronic Resources Assistant at the library of The Catholic University of America. Its a great job, and I love being back on a university campus! Katrina is also happy to have me home for dinner and on the weekends.
Katrina’s final semester in the Master’s program is coming up! In fact, she has already set a date for her graduate recital, May 1st. There is going to be a big party, we hope you can make it!
January 20th marks the inauguration of our newly elected President. Katrina and I plan on being there! I have been trying to get tickets to the parade and swearing-in ceremony as well as a few other events. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to witness history and we don’t want to miss it.
I apologize for being behind in pictures… I’m afraid there aren’t any new ones up right now, but there will be soon! I promise!
